Somebody asks me some version of this every year around now: fifteen kids, one backyard, three hours, what do we actually do with them? Usually it is a parent in Rockdale or Gwinnett who booked a Saturday in September and then remembered that Atlanta does not really cool off until the end of October. The yard is dry, the sun is still doing its thing at 3pm, and a stack of board games is not going to hold a nine-year-old for an afternoon.
The answer has been the same for as long as I have been doing this. Give them one big active thing to circle back to, then a couple of smaller games to fill the gaps. That is the whole formula. Everything below is just different ways to fill in those two slots, including some inflatable game setups parents keep asking me about.
Start with one big thing, not five small ones
The parties that run smoothly have a center of gravity. Kids play a game, get hot, go hit the big thing, cool off, drift back to the games. Without that anchor you end up running five activities at once and refereeing five separate arguments about whose turn it is.
Anything that holds a line of kids works as the anchor. A slide, an obstacle course, a game setup big enough that four or five of them can be on it at a time. The point is that it does not need you standing over it explaining rules every ten minutes.
Inflatable volleyball courts, and what to ask before booking one
This one has been showing up more around metro Atlanta the last couple of summers, and I get asked about it enough that it is worth explaining properly. An inflatable volleyball court is a self-contained playing area with padded inflatable walls and a net down the middle. Kids play inside the walls, so the ball stays in and nobody goes chasing it into the street. Some versions are built to run wet with a hose, so the floor stays slick and kids can dive without getting scraped up.
Party Lab does not rent these. We stick to bounce houses, water slides, and obstacle courses, which is what we know how to set up and service properly. But if you are calling around to vendors who do carry them, here is what I would ask about, because these are the things that turn into a problem on party morning:
- Footprint and clearance. Ask for the size of the unit plus how much room they want on every side of it. Then go out with a tape measure. A court that fits your yard on paper can still be blocked by a low branch or a gate that is too narrow for the rolled unit to get through.
- Wet or dry. If it runs wet, ask how far it can be from a hose bib and where the water drains. A slick inflatable in a flat yard means a soggy patch of grass for a couple of days after.
- Age range and headcount. These play better for the 8-and-up crowd than for preschoolers, and courts have a limit on how many kids belong inside at once. Get a real number instead of guessing.
- Surface. Most inflatables need to be staked. Georgia clay in September is hard, but it usually takes a stake fine. A sloped yard is the bigger issue.
- Who runs it. Some rentals come with an attendant, some are drop-off and you are the referee. Know which one you signed up for before fifteen kids are standing there.
Other active setups parents ask about
Inflatable volleyball is one of a handful of game-style rentals circulating in Atlanta right now. The short version: powered rentals need an outlet or a generator, hard-surface rentals want a driveway or a church parking lot, and almost all of them take more room than the photos suggest. Church festivals and school field days in DeKalb and Gwinnett tend to have the paved lot already, which is why you see these setups there more than in a regular backyard.
Garage-budget games that still burn energy
You do not need a second rental to fill the time around your anchor. Some of the best games at parties I have watched cost about eleven dollars total.
- Sponge relay. Two buckets per team, one full, one empty, a soaked sponge in between. Teams race to move the water.
- Sock toss into a laundry basket. Sounds like nothing. Somehow turns into a tournament.
- Bike and scooter wash. Sponges, spray bottles, a hose, and whatever wheels the kids brought. It is a chore that reads as a game, and it soaks everybody.
- Freeze tag with a water twist. Tagged kids stay frozen until someone dumps a cup of water on them.

Working around a real Atlanta yard
A few things that come up on almost every setup call around here. Slope matters more than square footage. A yard that looks big but runs downhill limits what can go in it safely, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than in your driveway. Shade matters too. If your yard has none, borrow a pop-up canopy, because a snack table baking in direct sun for four hours is rough on the food and the adults both.
And plan your cool-down breaks into the schedule rather than waiting until a kid looks done. Every 30 to 40 minutes, call everybody in for freeze pops in the shade. Keep a water jug going that is separate from whatever the games are splashing around, because kids will not stop to ask for a drink on their own.
